COULD BOSE SLEEPBUDS BE THE ANSWER TO YOUR TROUBLES?

The timing for the arrival of the Bose Sleepbuds at the office couldn’t have been better. For a little over two months now I’ve had trouble in my sleep paradise. It had reached a point where the demons under my bed were threatening to move out if I didn’t stop tossing and turning throughout the night. Which is highly unusual for me, since I am known to be someone who can sleep anytime, anywhere. Something had to be done, I had just told myself when the package arrived with a brand new pair of Bose Sleepbuds. I suppose, the gods do exist after all.

The Bose Sleepbuds are tiny. No, they are tinier than the regular earphones that you can get. In fact, once you put them on, the Bose Sleepbuds become invisible to others while the world of sound around you merges into a universe of silence. Yep, the Bose Sleepbuds have fabulous noise cancellation. But more on that later. For now, we’ll take a look at these and I’ll tell you this much, the packaging of these Bose Sleepbuds is sublime. A sleek round storage case with a sliding lid that also doubles up as a charger. Inside the bigger cardboard box are a plethora of charging points, so that you wouldn’t ever have to look for an international adapter, and three ear tips of different sizes. No, before you ask, there is no concept of one size fits all when it comes to ears.

BOSE SLEEPBUDS, APP-TLY NAMED

The way we are going, I doubt the day when you get an app to brush your teeth is far away. Scoffing at my rant? Digest this, there I was, in my pyjamas, wanting to sleep but downloading an app! You see the only way you can get the Bose Sleepbuds to get to work is via the Bose Sleep app, which is available on both Google Play and well as on the Apple iStore. And mind you, you’ve got to keep the phone’s Bluetooth on. Thankfully, the app is user-friendly and before long I find myself scrolling through the list of ten pre-set sounds on the Bose Sleepbuds. These ten sounds have been specially engineered to soothe the senses, calm the nerves and put you to sleep. Talk about the sound of hope for the sleep-deprived, and moi.

I put the Bose Sleepbuds on with some trepidation and shook my head to ensure they wouldn’t fall off. Stop laughing, the Bose Sleepbuds manual advises you to check the fit like this. In fact you should also check if you’re using the correct size of ear tips. Another app-t advice. By now, I can only hear half of what’s going on around me because the Bose Sleepbuds cuts down ambient sounds by as much as 50 per cent.

SLEEPING WITH BOSE SLEEPBUDS

I used the Bose Sleepbuds on three consecutive nights to see how effective they are. On the first night I chose a light but consistent rainfall sound, which promptly knocked me out. And for longer than I had these past two months too. Unfortunately, they didn’t prevent me from waking up in the middle of the night. The Bose Sleepbuds are designed to emit these soothing sounds throughout the night without requiring the batteries to be recharged.

Night two turned out to be even better when I chose a lovely woodfire crackling sound that I found more appealing. This time around they ensured sound sleep. I did wake up a few times but each time the Bose Sleepbuds managed to put me back to sleep. Soundly. So soundly in fact that I had missed my maid ring the doorbell.

The third and final night, I again chose the woodfire and pumped the volume up a little. By 3 in the morning I was awake and could hear both the soothing sound of fire crackling and a car being parked. Turns out one of the buds had fallen off. Scared it might happen again, I took them off. However the Sleepbuds seemed to have done their job for I could get back in Z zone without much trouble.

NOT EVERYTHING IS RIGHT WITH THE BOSE SLEEPBUDS

One of the biggest issues with the Bose Sleepbuds is that you can use these for nothing other than putting yourselves to sleep. You see one of the disadvantages of the super compact size is that you can only do so much. So after packing in the battery that would last through the night and packaging it all in, the storage in the Bose Sleepbuds could only accept the preset sounds. Are these sounds effective? Sure. But at Rs 22,900 for a pair I would definitely want these to make sure I sleep through the night too.
