The Royal Stag Mega Music Arijit Singh MTV India Tour

Words Mitalee Deshpande

My throat whined for me to stop singing tunelessly, but there was nothing preventing me from singing along with the fans to the heartthrob that was Arijit Singh.

First concert, favorite singer, my hometown. What else could I ask for?

There I was standing amidst hundreds of off-key singers, swaying to the music and wishing this state of euphoria would never end. My head was pounding, courtesy thirst and hunger, and my legs complained from standing for three straight hours. My hoarse throat whined for me to stop, but with all the crackling energy surrounding me there was nothing preventing me from singing along with the fans to the heartthrob that was Arijit Singh.

India’s favourite singer has been touring the country in a never before avatar. The Royal Stag Mega Music Arijit Singh MTV India Tour by Wizcraft is spread over 10 cities over a period of four months starting with Kolkata and ending in Mumbai on the 24th of March. The fourth halt was in Pune, the city of the Peshwas and there couldn’t have been a better way to spend a Saturday night than with the maestro.

The concert, which started on an intense note of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil with the singer tip-toeing on the stage, reached a crescendo that refused to decline. The media-shy Arijit set the stage on fire with his energy, making sure that no moment lacked lustre. Surrounded by various musical instruments, Arijit’s performance was a mix of his personal songs along with songs by Atif Aslam, eventually leading to old melodies like Chaiyya Chaiyya. The highlight of the concert would be the moment right after the short break, where Arijit showcased his music composing talents by creating a music loop and singing to it. The concert concluded with Channa Mereya, the2017 Song of The Year (Zee Cine Awards) and the echoes of the soulful track could be heard long after the evening had come to an end.

A friend once told me that one’s first music concert should be attended by oneself. I argued with her, but in hindsight I couldn’t agree more. I came back a different person. I remember standing behind the barricades, lost in the music with an adrenaline-charged atmosphere, and knowing that everything is going to be okay. I stood singing tunelessly along with the crowd when I realised the power of music; it washes away the worries and all that was left was me and that beautiful moment. My first musical concert. My favourite singer. And me.

Arijit Singh performs next at Gurgaon on 17th February, Ahmedabad on 24th February, Hyderabad on 10th March, Indore on 17th March, and concludes the tour in Mumbai on 24th March 2018.
