If you have been reading my articles in the pages of our lovely mag, you’ll know I’m a man who appreciates the finer things in life. A well appointed room at a luxury hotel, preferably with heritage. A Mont Blanc fountain pen instead of a regular ball point. In fact one of my most cherished possessions is my vintage Omega Seamaster. I love my expensive single malts and exotic gins. Yes, I do like the fine things of life and one of the finest of them all is fine wine. In this case, Canadian wine.
IT’S ALL ABOUT THAT BASE
In the world of wine, Canadian wines are some of the youngest in the world at just about half a century old. The winery we drove up to is just about four decades old, but what a winery! Sprawling vineyards and a beautiful chateau that serves as the winery. The guided tour by wine associate Kate was absolutely fantastic, especially because she was so passionate about the whole thing. The tour is short and sweet but the tasting is sweeter (obviously).
We had five different kinds of wine, which is part of the regular tour. So there was a Riesling, a Chardonnay, a Pinot Noir and then something called a Gamay Noir “Droit”, which was developed by this particular winery. Following that, the good folks at the winery and Destination Canada were generous enough to help us taste two lovely varieties of ice wine. Absolutely top drawer stuff. Really, can’t imagine why people wouldn’t want the fine things of life.
